The balls cover the surface of the water to create a blanket of insulation, effectively trapping heat and inhibiting evaporation so that your system operates at peak efficiency. They also have the added benefit of keeping the product underwater, which is something a lid can't guarantee. These balls can also withstand temperatures up to 230 degrees Fahrenheit in most fluid baths, so you don't have to worry about them deteriorating.
