The idea of Velcro® was first thought up in 1941 by George de Mestral, a Swiss engineer, when he was out on a hike in Switzerland. He noticed that burrs were sticking to his dog’s fur and was fascinated by this. In 1952, the patent was formed for the hook and loop fastener company we know as Velcro® today.
