Now a global franchise, the origin story of The Cheesecake Factory dates to the 1940s when Evelyn Overton tweaked and perfected a cheesecake recipe that she found in her local Detroit newspaper. Friends and family raved over the recipe, so Evelyn opened a small bakery. That first bakery was short-lived, but in 1972 when the Overton family relocated to Los Angeles, they relaunched their bakery, and then their son, David, opened the first The Cheesecake Factory restaurant in 1978.
