A dredge is typically used to dispense flour. When dredging chicken, for example, you can use a dredge to apply the flour and/or breadcrumbs. This can reduce waste and reduce risk of cross-contamination. A shaker is a multipurpose dispenser. Uses include applying salt and pepper or other seasonings, sprinkling nutmeg or cinnamon over coffees and desserts, applying a dry rub to cuts of meat, or adding cheese to a dish.
